Alexandrine parakeet

Psittacula eupatria

The Alexandrine Parakeet is a species of bird in the Psittacidae family. It was named in memory of the emperor Alexander the Great, who had a few individuals exported to various countries and regions of Europe and the Mediterranean.

Native to Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, this parakeet generally lives in wet and dry forests, where it finds nuts, flowers, seeds and fruit to feed on. It lives for around forty years, always in colonies. A moderately endangered species, it is nevertheless listed in Appendix II of the Washington Convention (endangered if trade is not controlled).
